Quick answer

Click your profile iconAccount InfoBilling, open the three-dot (…) menu on your plan card, and choose Cancel subscription. You'll be walked through a retention screen, a "Why are you cancelling?" survey, and a "Get 3 months free" downsell — keep clicking Continue cancellation until you see "Your plan has been cancelled." You keep access until the end of your current billing period, but Synthesia purchases are non-refundable, and you lose your videos once the plan expires — so download them first.

Step-by-step instructions

1

Open Billing in your workspace settings

Sign in at app.synthesia.io. Click your profile icon (top right), then Account Info, then Billing. The Plan card shows your current plan (for example "Starter - Monthly") and your next payment date.

Open the three-dot menu on your plan

On the plan card, click the three-dot (…) button next to your plan name. A small menu opens with Change plan, Cancel subscription, and Manage billing details. Click Cancel subscription.

3

Skip the "you'll lose access" retention screen

Synthesia shows a screen titled "You'll lose access to these amazing features" listing personal avatars, 125+ stock avatars, the AI video assistant, guest accounts, and the avatar builder. To proceed, click Continue cancellation (the plain text link on the left), not Stay on this plan.

4

Pick a reason in the cancellation survey

Next is "Why do you want to cancel?" with single-select options: too expensive, not using Synthesia right now, too hard to use, doesn't meet my needs, technical issues, switching to a different product, or Other. Select any one to continue.

5

Confirm your reason and continue

Once a reason is selected (for example "Other"), the radio button fills in. Click Continue cancellation again to move on.

Leave feedback (optional)

If you picked Other, Synthesia shows a free-text box (up to 400 characters). This is optional — you can leave it blank and continue. It does not affect whether the cancellation goes through.

Submit and continue

Type a note if you like, then click Continue cancellation to proceed to the final offer.

Decline the "3 months free" downsell

Synthesia makes one last offer: "Get 3 months free with your subscription" by switching to the Starter Annual plan. If you genuinely want to keep Synthesia, this is a real discount — but it locks you into a year. To finish cancelling, ignore "Get 3 months free now" and click Continue cancellation.

Confirm "Your plan has been cancelled"

A confirmation modal appears: "Your plan has been cancelled — You can still use Synthesia until [date]." Click Close. The cancellation is now complete.

Verify your access end date

Back on the Billing page, a banner at the top confirms the cancellation: "Your subscription will expire on [date]," and the plan card shows how many days you have left. You keep full access until that date — Synthesia does not refund the unused portion.

Cancelled by accident? You have 48 hours

If you cancelled by mistake, Synthesia support can reverse it if you reach out within 48 hours of cancelling. Contact them via live chat in the app or email support@synthesia.io. After your access end date passes, you can still resubscribe, often via the "Reactivate" prompt on the billing banner.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Synthesia's Customer Terms of Service state that all purchases are non-cancelable and non-refundable, for both monthly and annual plans. There is no money-back window. Cancelling stops future charges but does not refund the period you've already paid for — you simply keep access until that period ends.

At the end of your current billing period, not immediately. After you cancel, a banner shows the exact expiry date (and a "days left" countdown). You keep full access — videos, avatars, credits — until that date, then the account loses access.

You lose them. Synthesia warns that once your billing period ends, you lose access to the account and all videos in it. Download everything you want to keep before the expiry date shown on the cancellation banner — exports are not available once access is gone.

There is nothing to cancel on Free — you're not being billed, so no subscription exists to stop. The Cancel subscription option only appears on the paid Starter and Creator plans. If you want to stop using a Free workspace entirely, you can delete it or contact support, but it won't generate charges either way.

Yes, if you act fast. Synthesia support can reverse an accidental cancellation if you contact them within 48 hours via in-app live chat or support@synthesia.io. After that window, you can still resubscribe — the billing page usually shows a "Reactivate" option — but it starts a new billing cycle.

Only if you actually want to keep Synthesia. The "Get 3 months free" downsell requires switching to the annual (yearly) Starter plan, which commits you to a full year of billing. It is a genuine discount, but accepting it is the opposite of cancelling. If you want out, click Continue cancellation and skip the offer.
