Quick answer

Sign in at portal.expressvpn.com/my-subscription, click Edit Subscription, then click Turn Off Automatic Renewal through three confirmation screens until you see "Your subscription has been canceled." VPN access continues until the end of your billing cycle — ExpressVPN does not refund partial periods outside the first-time 30-day money-back window.

Wondering if you're paying more than you used to? compare your subscription costs.

Step-by-step instructions

1

Sign in and open your Subscription page

Go to portal.expressvpn.com/my-subscription in any browser. If prompted, enter the email on file and the verification code ExpressVPN emails you. You cannot cancel inside the ExpressVPN app — it must be done on the web or through the app store that billed you.

2

Click Edit Subscription

On the Subscription card you'll see your current plan, renewal date, and an Edit Subscription link. Click it to open the subscription-settings page. The button you actually need is buried at the bottom of this next page, so scroll down once it loads.

3

Click Turn Off Automatic Renewal

The Edit Subscription Settings page shows your plan, renewal date, and Automatic renewal: ON. At the bottom there are three buttons — Back to Dashboard, Turn Off Automatic Renewal, and Change Plan. Click Turn Off Automatic Renewal. (Some accounts show this control labelled Cancel Subscription — same button, same flow.)

Confirm on the "Are you sure?" page

ExpressVPN takes you to a confirmation page reading "You are about to turn off automatic payments. Are you sure you would like to continue?" The same three buttons appear again. Click Turn Off Automatic Renewal a second time.

Skip the "Don't leave yourself exposed!" save offer

A modal pops up listing Lightway, Threat Manager, and Split tunneling as features you'll "lose today." This is retention copy — those features keep working until the end of your current billing cycle no matter when you click. Click Turn Off Automatic Renewal in the modal, not Keep These Benefits.

Verify the goodbye screen

You'll land on a confirmation page reading "Your subscription has been canceled" with your exact access-until date in red. That date is your final billing-cycle day — until then ExpressVPN keeps working as normal, then your account drops to inactive. Screenshot this page for your records.

Check your bank statement on the renewal date

Multiple users on r/Express_VPN report being charged after a successful-looking cancellation — sometimes because they stopped clicking too early, sometimes because auto-renew was silently reactivated. Set a calendar reminder for the renewal date and check the card. If you see a charge, demand a refund via live chat and your bank chargeback rights — both have worked for affected users.

Request a refund if you're inside the 30-day window

First-time subscribers can self-serve a full refund within 30 days of purchase. Go to portal.expressvpn.com/invoices, click Refund next to the charge, optionally fill the survey, then Proceed With Refund. ExpressVPN processes it within 10 days. The 30-day guarantee only applies to your first-ever subscription and does not cover renewals or Apple App Store purchases — those are at Apple's discretion.

If you signed up through the Apple App Store or Google Play

The Edit Subscription button won't appear on ExpressVPN's site if a third party handles billing. Apple: Settings > your name > Subscriptions > ExpressVPN > Cancel Subscription. Google Play: Play Store > profile icon > Payments & subscriptions > Subscriptions > ExpressVPN > Cancel Subscription. App-store policy requires you cancel at least 24 hours before the next billing date to avoid the next charge.

If you paid with Bitcoin or Paymentwall, you're already done

ExpressVPN does not auto-renew Bitcoin or Paymentwall subscriptions — they expire on their own at the end of the term. There is no Turn Off Automatic Renewal button to click for these payment methods. Just let the period run out.

Lock the bill if you don't trust auto-renew to stay off

Reddit threads document cases of ExpressVPN flipping auto-renew back on without notification. Belt-and-braces options: if you pay with PayPal, cancel the recurring payment from your PayPal account (ExpressVPN can't override that); if you paid by card, switch to a virtual or prepaid card with no balance, or ask ExpressVPN support in live chat to delete your stored card details (they don't do this on cancellation by default).

Frequently Asked Questions

You should not be — once you reach the "Your subscription has been canceled" screen, ExpressVPN says auto-renewal is off and your VPN continues until the current cycle ends. In practice, complaints on r/Express_VPN report unexpected post-cancel charges, and an active class action (Millar v. Express Technologies, Ltd., Case No. 8:25-cv-01273, C.D. Cal.) accuses ExpressVPN of violating California's Automatic Renewal Law. Set a reminder for the renewal date and check your card — if a charge appears, dispute it via live chat and your bank simultaneously.

First-time subscribers within 30 days of purchase can self-serve a full refund at portal.expressvpn.com/invoices — click Refund next to the invoice, optionally fill the short survey, then Proceed With Refund. Refunds take up to 10 days. The 30-day guarantee does not apply to renewal charges, repeat customers (users who previously got a refund are ineligible), or Apple App Store purchases. EU and UK users have an additional 14-day statutory right of withdrawal on new subscriptions. Outside the 30-day window, refunds are case-by-case via ExpressVPN live chat — push, because Reddit users report success after one or two follow-ups.

Your ExpressVPN apps stop connecting to the VPN once the billing cycle ends. ExpressKeys (the password manager) keeps working as read-only — you can still view and use stored logins, you just can't add new entries. Your account, payment method, and any stored credit card details stay on file unless you explicitly ask support to remove them. Add-ons like a dedicated IP cancel alongside the main subscription.

ExpressVPN's website won't show a cancel option when billing is handled elsewhere. On iPhone or iPad: Settings > [your name] > Subscriptions > ExpressVPN > Cancel Subscription. On Android: Play Store > profile icon > Payments & subscriptions > Subscriptions > ExpressVPN > Cancel Subscription. App-store cancellations must happen at least 24 hours before the next billing date to avoid the next charge, and Apple App Store purchases are excluded from ExpressVPN's 30-day money-back guarantee — Apple handles those refunds at its own discretion.

Yes. The cancellation flow is identical to a paid cancellation, but timing matters more — for app-store free trials (the only kind ExpressVPN currently runs), you must cancel at least 24 hours before the trial ends to avoid being billed. Trial cancellations through Apple or Google take effect at the end of the trial period, not immediately, so you keep access until the trial would have ended.

Yes. The cancellation confirmation page has a Reactivate Subscription link, and signing back into a cancelled account at any time lets you re-subscribe on any current plan. Your stored logins in ExpressKeys remain intact while inactive, so they come back online the moment you reactivate. Note that returning customers are not eligible for the 30-day money-back guarantee on subsequent subscriptions — it covers first-time purchases only.
