How to Cancel HBO Max

A 8-step walkthrough with real screenshots from the live cancel flow.

Easy ~3 minutes Updated 3 weeks ago Verified working

Quick answer

Sign in at max.com/subscription, click Cancel Your Subscription, skip the discount and offer-confirmation screens, then submit the reason survey to land on the cancellation confirmation. You keep access until the end of the current billing period — HBO Max does not refund partial months, even on annual plans.

Wondering if you're paying more than you used to? what streaming services cost in 2026.

Step-by-step instructions

1

Sign in to your HBO Max account

Open max.com in a web browser (the service rebranded back from "Max" to "HBO Max" in 2025, but the max.com domain still resolves), click your profile icon in the top right, and choose Subscription. Cancellation is browser-only — the HBO Max app on Smart TVs, Roku, Fire TV, and consoles does not show a cancel option even if you signed up there.

2

Click Cancel Your Subscription

On the Subscription page you'll see your upcoming payment, plan, payment method, and a stack of options: Change Your Plan, Set Up Hulu / Disney+, Payment Method, Payment History, Redeem a Code, and Cancel Your Subscription at the very bottom. Click Cancel Your Subscription.

Skip the discount save offer

HBO Max pitches a "Save $7.00/mo" promo on the Disney+, Hulu, Max Bundle for 3 months. Ignore the See Offer button in the middle of the page and click Cancel Subscription at the bottom.

If you accidentally clicked See Offer, click Back

Tapping See Offer takes you to a Confirm Your Offer page that compares the current $16.99/month plan to a $9.99/month promo for 3 months. Click Back at the bottom to return to the previous screen, then click Cancel Subscription instead.

5

Pick a cancellation reason and submit

HBO Max shows a "We have cancelled your subscription" header along with the access end date, and asks "What made you decide to cancel?" Pick any of the six options — Too expensive, Not enough time, Finished what I was watching, Switching to a bundle, Couldn't find anything to watch, or Other — and click Submit. You can also write a free-text note if you select Other.

Max post-cancellation page reading "We have cancelled your subscription" with the access end date and a survey titled "What made you decide to cancel?" listing six radio options: Too expensive for what I'm getting, I don't have enough time to use the service right now, I finished the show or movie I signed up for, I decided to subscribe to Max in a bundle, I couldn't find anything else I wanted to watch, and Other, plus an Additional feedback textarea and a Submit button
6

Verify the cancellation confirmation

After submitting the survey you'll see a "Thanks for sharing your feedback with us!" card and a Back to Streaming button. The header still shows your access end date and a link to your subscription settings to resume. HBO Max emails confirmation separately. The on-screen note about a pro-rated add-on refund only applies to specific add-ons (Extra Member and Sports) — see the refund FAQ below.

If you signed up through Apple, Google, Roku, Amazon, Samsung TV, or a partner provider

The Cancel Your Subscription row will not appear on max.com if a third party handles billing. Cancel through whichever platform charges you: iPhone — Settings > [your name] > Subscriptions; Google Play — play.google.com/store/account/subscriptions; Roku — my.roku.com/subscriptions and turn off auto-renew; Amazon Appstore — amazon.com/appstoresubscriptions; Amazon Prime Video Channels — Manage Your Prime Video Channels and choose Cancel Channel; Samsung TV — samsungcheckout.com under Purchase History > Subscriptions; cable, mobile, or other partners (AT&T, Spectrum, Xfinity, Verizon, Cox, DIRECTV, Optimum, Sling, YouTube TV, DoorDash, Xumo) — log into the partner's account portal and remove HBO Max from your add-ons. Visit max.com/subscription to identify which platform is billing you.

Bundle subscribers: cancel at the platform that bills you

The Disney+, Hulu, Max Bundle is billed by one provider — whoever you signed up through — and that single cancellation ends all three services. If you manage the bundle at max.com (your Subscription page shows the bundle plan), HBO Max bills you and canceling at max.com/subscription stops Disney+ and Hulu too. If you signed up through Hulu, cancel at hulu.com/account; through Disney+, at disneyplus.com/account. Canceling on a service that does not bill you will not stop the charge.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Once you cancel, HBO Max won't bill you again on a monthly plan, and you keep full access until the end of the current billing period. Annual (Saver) plans are different: HBO Max's help center states monthly payments remain payable for the remainder of the 12-month subscription period if you cancel mid-term, and you keep access until that period ends. The exact access end date appears on the cancellation confirmation page and in your confirmation email.

HBO Max's direct-billed help docs state a no-refund policy on the base subscription, including yearly plans. The two documented add-on exceptions are the **Extra Member Add-On** (prorated refund for the remaining days when you cancel) and the **Sports Add-On** (refund for the remaining days once your base subscription expires). EU and UK consumer law has a 14-day cooling-off right on new digital subscriptions, but HBO Max's signup flow has you waive it the moment streaming begins, so it rarely applies in practice. If your billing platform is a third party (Apple, Google, Roku, Amazon), refunds follow that platform's policy, not HBO Max's.

HBO Max's help center says re-subscribing with the same account preserves your profiles, My List, and watch history — but it does not publish a retention window. If you rejoin shortly after cancellation, expect everything to be there. The longer you stay canceled, the less you should count on it being kept indefinitely. Downloads stop working on the cancellation date because they require an active subscription. Deleting the HBO Max app from your TV or phone does not cancel billing — it only removes the app.

You must cancel through whichever platform handles billing — max.com will not show a Cancel Your Subscription row in this case. iPhone (App Store): Settings > [your name] > Subscriptions. Google Play: play.google.com/store/account/subscriptions. Roku: my.roku.com/subscriptions, then turn off auto-renew. Amazon Appstore: amazon.com/appstoresubscriptions. Amazon Prime Video Channels: Manage Your Prime Video Channels > Cancel Channel. Samsung TV: samsungcheckout.com > Purchase History > Subscriptions. Cable, mobile, or other partners (AT&T, Spectrum, Xfinity, Verizon, Cox, DIRECTV, Optimum, Sling, YouTube TV, DoorDash, Xumo): log into the partner's account portal and cancel HBO Max from your subscriptions or add-ons. Visit max.com/subscription to identify which platform is billing you.

HBO Max's help center says most subscription providers do not offer a free trial. If your plan or promotional offer includes one, the signup page tells you upfront. When a trial does apply, the cancellation flow is identical to a paid subscription: Subscription > Cancel Your Subscription. Cancel before the trial end date or you will be billed at the regular rate for the next period.

Yes. Sign back in at max.com any time before your access ends and use the resume link in the confirmation banner, or sign up fresh with the same account after the end date. HBO Max says re-subscribing with your existing account keeps your profiles, My List, and watch history. The help center does not publish a retention window, so the longer you stay canceled, the more likely some account data shifts — but a quick rejoin should bring everything back.
