Quick answer

Go to youtube.com/paid_memberships, expand Manage membership under YouTube Premium, click Cancel, then confirm with Yes, cancel. You keep Premium (and its bundled YouTube Music Premium) until the end of your current billing period — YouTube does not refund partial months.

Step-by-step instructions

1

Open your memberships page

Sign in at youtube.com and go to youtube.com/paid_memberships. You can also click your profile picture (top right) and select "Purchases and memberships". This is a web-only flow — labels differ if Apple, Google, or a carrier bills you (see the optional step below).

2

Expand Manage membership

Under the Memberships heading, find YouTube Premium and click "Manage membership". The panel expands to show a "Cancel" link, a "Pause membership" option, and your backup payment method.

3

Click Cancel

Click the blue "Cancel" link in the expanded panel. YouTube opens a "Cancel membership" dialog — it does not immediately end your subscription, so keep going.

4

Skip the save nudges in the dialog

The "Cancel membership" dialog shows your access-until date, a "You've been a member since" recap, and a "Benefits you haven't used" list with "Try it" and "Learn more" links. None of that stops the cancellation — do not click "Don't cancel".

5

Confirm with Yes, cancel

Click the blue "Yes, cancel" button at the bottom of the dialog to finish. "Don't cancel" keeps your membership active.

6

Verify the "Sorry to see you go" screen

A confirmation reading "Sorry to see you go!" appears: "Your YouTube Premium membership has been canceled." Click "Close". If you don't see this screen, the cancellation did not go through — repeat the steps.

7

Confirm your access-until date

Premium keeps working until the date shown in the cancel dialog (your billing period end). After that you won't be charged and your bundled YouTube Music Premium reverts to the free, ad-supported tier. Any videos or music you downloaded for offline use stop playing once the membership ends.

Consider Pause instead of canceling

The Memberships page has a "Pause membership" option that suspends billing for up to 6 months and resumes automatically. You lose all Premium features while paused, but your plan and price are held. Use this only if you actually want to come back — a pause is not a cancellation.

If Apple, Google, or a carrier bills you

If you subscribed to Premium inside the iOS app or through a mobile carrier, the Cancel link may not appear on youtube.com. Cancel through Apple (Settings > your name > Subscriptions), Google Play (play.google.com/store/account/subscriptions), or your carrier account instead.

Family plan and shared-card situations

Only the account owner can cancel — not whoever's card is on file. If you pay for a friend's or relative's Premium, you cannot cancel their account; you can only remove your card as the payment method. On a Family plan, the family manager's cancellation ends Premium for all members (up to 5).

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Once you confirm with "Yes, cancel", YouTube stops future billing. You keep Premium until the end of your current billing period — the exact access-until date shows in the cancel dialog. Duplicate or double charges are a recurring complaint, so check your next statement; if you're billed again after canceling, dispute it with Google Play support or your bank.

YouTube generally does not prorate refunds — you simply keep access until the paid period ends. Some regions with stronger consumer protection (like the EU/UK within 14 days of subscribing) are exceptions. If Apple or Google Play billed you, request the refund through that platform, not YouTube.

Your account, playlists, and history stay intact. But offline downloads (both YouTube videos and YouTube Music tracks) stop playing when the membership ends, and YouTube Music drops back to the free, ad-supported tier. Canceling Premium also ends the ad-free, background-play, and Music Premium benefits bundled with it.

The Cancel link only appears on youtube.com if YouTube bills you directly. If you subscribed inside the iOS app: Settings > [your name] > Subscriptions > YouTube Premium > Cancel. If through Google Play: play.google.com/store/account/subscriptions. Carrier-billed plans are canceled through the carrier account.

Yes. The cancel flow is identical during a trial — the dialog shows "Free trial ends [date]". Cancel any time before that date and you keep trial access until it ends without being charged. You don't need to wait until the trial is almost over to cancel.

Yes. The "Sorry to see you go!" screen includes a "renew here" link, and you can resubscribe any time from youtube.com/paid_memberships. Your account, playlists, and history are preserved, so restarting picks up where you left off.
