Quick answer

Notion has no "cancel" button — you stop paid billing by downgrading the workspace to Free. On desktop or web, open Notion, go to Settings → Billing → Change plan, select Free, click Continue, skip the save offers, and click Downgrade. You keep paid features until the end of the current billing cycle — Notion does not pro-rate the unused time.

Step-by-step instructions

1

Export your workspace first

Before downgrading, back up your content: click Settings → General (or Settings at the workspace level) → Export all workspace content. Downgrading does not delete your pages, but multi-member workspaces get capped at 1,000 blocks and some features lock, so a clean export is cheap insurance.

2

Open Settings → Billing

Click Settings in the left sidebar, then Billing under the Workspace section. You'll see your current Plan (for example "Business · $24 per month · Renews [date]") with a Change plan button, plus your billing period, payment method, and invoices.

3

Click Change plan and pick Free

Click Change plan. A "Which plan do you want to change to?" modal lists Free, Plus, Business, and Enterprise Limited. Select the Free ($0 per member / month) radio button, then click Continue.

Fill in the reason survey (optional)

Notion shows "We'd love your input… Let us know why you're downgrading" with checkboxes like "Too expensive", "Not using it enough", and "Switching to another tool". This is optional — you can check one, several, or none, then click Continue.

5

Decline the 10% off save offer

Notion may show a retention offer — "10% off your Business plan · Get 10% off for 3 months if you keep your plan" — with a large "Get 10% off" button and a much smaller "Continue downgrade to Free" text link underneath. Click the small "Continue downgrade to Free" link to keep canceling.

6

Confirm the downgrade

A "Continue downgrading to Free?" screen lists what you'll lose — for a Business workspace that's unlimited blocks dropping to 1,000 team blocks, limited AI credits, and AI connectors/integrations being removed. It also notes you keep current features until your plan ends. Click the red Downgrade button.

7

Note your end date on the confirmation

A "Your workspace is now on Free" confirmation appears, stating you keep all current features until a specific date (the end of your paid cycle) and can resubscribe anytime. Click Done. Nothing is charged again after this.

Verify (and undo, if needed) on the Billing page

Back on Billing, a banner reads "Pending changes scheduled for [date] · Business Plan → Free Plan" and the plan now shows "Cancels [date]". That banner's Cancel changes button reverses the downgrade if you change your mind before it takes effect.

If you bought Plus through Apple or Google on mobile

Notion only sells through the App Store or Google Play for the Plus plan on a single-member workspace purchased in the mobile app. If that's you, cancel through Apple (Settings → your name → Subscriptions) or Google Play (Play Store → Subscriptions) — the in-app downgrade won't stop an app-store subscription.

Request a refund if you signed up recently

Downgrading stops future billing but doesn't refund the current period on its own. If you're within 3 days of a monthly charge or 30 days of an annual one, email team@makenotion.com for a full (non-prorated) refund. Removed team seats are not credited mid-cycle — you keep them until renewal.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Once the downgrade to Free is scheduled, Notion won't renew your paid plan. You keep all paid features until the end of the current billing cycle, and the Billing page shows the exact "Cancels [date]". Check your next card statement to confirm — some users report Notion retaining card details across linked workspaces, so it's worth verifying the recurring charge actually stopped.

Downgrading alone does not trigger a refund. Notion offers a full, non-prorated refund if you email team@makenotion.com within 3 days of signing up for monthly billing, or within 30 days for annual billing. In the EU/UK, distance-selling rules generally give a 14-day withdrawal right. Outside those windows you simply keep access until the paid cycle ends — there's no mid-cycle proration.

Your content is not deleted. But on the Free plan a workspace with two or more members is capped at 1,000 blocks, file uploads are limited to 5MB each, version history drops to 7 days, guests are limited to 10, and you keep only the first chart. Automations, private teamspaces, and advanced settings become view-only or locked. A solo (one-person) Free workspace keeps unlimited blocks. Export your content first if any of that matters.

You can't change or cancel a Notion plan in the iOS or Android app — plan changes only work on desktop or web. The one exception: if you bought the Plus plan for a single-member workspace through the App Store or Google Play, you must cancel it through Apple (Settings → your name → Subscriptions) or Google Play (Subscriptions), because that billing runs through the app store, not Notion.

The downgrade lands at the end of your current billing cycle, not immediately — until then you keep every paid feature. After scheduling it, the Billing page shows a "Pending changes scheduled for [date]" banner with a Cancel changes button that reverses the downgrade any time before that date.

Yes. Sign back in on desktop or web, go to Settings → Billing (or Upgrade plan) and pick a paid plan again. Your workspace and content are intact, so re-upgrading restores the higher block limits, longer history, and AI features. If a failed payment auto-downgraded you, settle the unpaid invoice from the Upgrade tab to restore the plan.
