Quick answer

Sign in at vocabulary.com/account, find the Subscription Plan section, click Cancel My Subscription, then confirm. Cancellation takes effect immediately for renewals — you keep Learner access until the end of the current billing period. Vocabulary.com does not prorate unused days, but Terms allow a full refund request within 30 days of the purchase date.

Step-by-step instructions

1

Sign in on the web at My Account

Open vocabulary.com/account in a browser and sign in to the account that holds the Learner Subscription. Canceling is a web action on My Account — deleting the Vocabulary.com iOS or Android app does not stop billing by itself.

2

Find the Subscription Plan section

On the My Account page, locate the section labelled Subscription Plan. It shows your current plan and billing-cycle end date. Official help points here for both upgrades and cancels.

3

Click Cancel My Subscription

Under the plan selection area, click Cancel My Subscription. Vocabulary.com's help center documents this as the cancel control — there is no separate cancel URL beyond My Account.

4

Confirm your selection

When prompted, confirm that you want to cancel. Until you confirm, the subscription keeps auto-renewing. The plans page states subscriptions renew automatically and that you can cancel online anytime.

5

Verify the billing-cycle end date

After you confirm, check My Account again for the date your paid period ends. Terms say cancellation is effective immediately for renewals, and you keep program access until that billing period ends — Vocabulary.com will not charge the card again at renewal.

6

Use your remaining paid days

You keep full Learner access — unlimited VocabTrainer practice, personalized plans, and included test-prep programs — through the last day of the cycle you already paid for. Benefits stop together when the period ends; they do not cut off the moment you click cancel.

7

Know what Free/Basic looks like after the period ends

Help docs say the account returns to "trial" mode after the last day of the billing cycle. For a consumer Learner plan that means Free/Basic: dictionary lookups, lists, and Vocabulary Jams stay available, but VocabTrainer is capped at 10 questions per day.

8

Request a refund within 30 days if you just purchased

Terms §3.1: Vocabulary.com does not give refunds or credits for partially used membership periods after the window closes, but if you are not satisfied you can request a full refund of the purchase price within thirty (30) days of the Purchase Date. Use the contact form with the Payment topic, email support@vocabulary.com, or call 1-888-606-0846 (Mon–Fri, 9 a.m.–8 p.m. Eastern).

9

Do not delete your account to stop the bill

Canceling the subscription stops auto-renew and keeps your word lists, mastery progress, and dictionary history on the Free/Basic account. Closing or deleting the account is a different action and can wipe that learning data. Cancel the plan; leave the account intact unless you truly want everything gone.

If Cancel My Subscription does not appear (Apple or Google billing)

Learner plans are sold on vocabulary.com, but the Google Play listing declares In-App Purchases. If My Account has no Cancel My Subscription button, billing is likely through the store that charged you. On iPhone: Settings → your name → Subscriptions → Vocabulary.com → Cancel Subscription. On Android: play.google.com/store/account/subscriptions → Vocabulary.com → Cancel subscription. Store refunds go through Apple or Google, not Vocabulary.com's 30-day Terms path.

Classroom or school Site License: different product

Educator Classroom Licenses and school/district Site Licenses are separate from the consumer Learner Subscription. Teachers still cancel individual paid plans from My Account → Cancel My Subscription, but school-provided access is managed by the school administrator — accepting a school invitation stops further charges on an individual educator subscription per Vocabulary.com's FAQ. Students on a school license typically cannot cancel the institution's plan.

Contact support if cancel or refund is stuck

If confirmation never appears, you were charged after canceling, or you need the 30-day refund: use vocabulary.com/help/contactus, pick the Payment topic, or call 1-888-606-0846. Support hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern, except holidays. Vocabulary.com is operated by Thinkmap, Inc. as a division of IXL Learning — bank descriptors may show Vocabulary.com, Thinkmap, or IXL.

Frequently Asked Questions

No — once Cancel My Subscription is confirmed, Vocabulary.com will not renew the card at the next billing date. You keep Learner access until the end of the current billing period. The end date is listed on My Account. Watch the following statement anyway: if a charge posts after that date, contact support with your confirmation and date screenshot.

Terms say Vocabulary.com does not provide refunds or credits for partially used membership periods. The documented exception: if you are not satisfied, you can request a full refund of the purchase price within thirty (30) days of the Purchase Date. Outside that window, expect period-end access only — no proration. EU and UK consumers may also have a 14-day right of withdrawal on new distance contracts under local law. App Store or Google Play purchases must be refunded through Apple or Google.

Your account stays. Through the end of the paid billing period you keep full Learner access. After that date the account returns to Free/Basic: dictionary, lists, and Jams remain, but VocabTrainer drops to 10 questions per day. Mastery history and custom lists are not described as wiped by cancel — deleting the account is what risks permanent loss.

If Cancel My Subscription is missing on vocabulary.com/account, cancel where you were billed. iPhone or iPad: Settings → [your name] → Subscriptions → Vocabulary.com → Cancel Subscription. Android: Google Play → profile → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions → Vocabulary.com → Cancel subscription. Access continues for the period already paid. Refunds for store purchases go through Apple or Google Play, not Vocabulary.com support's 30-day Terms refund.

Vocabulary.com offers a Free/Basic account without a Learner Subscription: dictionary, lists, Jams, and 10 VocabTrainer questions per day. Learner Subscriptions (1, 6, or 12 months on the US plans page — $12.99/mo, $39.99 every 6 months, or $59.99/yr) unlock unlimited VocabTrainer and the full learner benefits. After you cancel a paid plan, you fall back to that Free/Basic experience when the billing period ends — cancel before renewal if you do not want another charge.

Yes. Sign back in and subscribe again from vocabulary.com/learner-subscription/plans. Your account and learning history remain on Free/Basic while you are canceled, so restarting restores unlimited VocabTrainer on top of what you already built. Returning-customer promos are not documented as a standing offer — check the plans page while signed in for current pricing (US list vs regional international discounts can differ).
