Easy ~3 minutes Updated 2 weeks ago Verified working

Quick answer

Sign in at account.microsoft.com/services, click Manage on your Game Pass subscription, then click Cancel subscription and skip the pause and downgrade save offers. You keep full Game Pass access until the end of your current billing period — Microsoft does not offer prorated refunds.

Step-by-step instructions

1

Sign in to your Microsoft account

Open account.microsoft.com/services in any web browser and sign in with the same Microsoft account you use for Xbox. The web flow is identical for every tier — Essential, Premium, PC Game Pass, or Ultimate. You can also cancel from the Xbox console or the Xbox mobile app, but the web path has the cleanest UI.

2

Find your Xbox Game Pass subscription

On the Services & Subscriptions page, scroll to your Xbox Game Pass entry. The card shows your current tier, next billing date, and payment method. Click Manage to open the subscription detail page.

3

Click Cancel subscription, not Turn off recurring billing

The Manage page shows two separate buttons: Cancel subscription and Turn off recurring billing. Both stop future charges, but Cancel subscription is the cleaner option. If you only see "Turn on recurring billing," auto-renewal is already off — your subscription will lapse on the date shown and no further action is needed.

4

Skip the Pause offer

Microsoft's first save offer is a pause for up to 3 months. Pause keeps your account in the system and auto-resumes at the end of the pause window — meaning you will be billed again unless you cancel before then. Click No thanks or Continue cancellation to move past it.

5

Skip the downgrade offer

Next, Microsoft pitches a cheaper tier — Ultimate subscribers see Premium, Premium subscribers see Essential. The pitch frames it as "savings" but it just lowers your future bill while keeping the subscription active. Click Continue cancellation if you want to fully stop paying.

If this applies to you

Pick a cancellation reason (optional)

Microsoft shows a short reason survey with options like "Too expensive," "Don't play enough," and "Found a better service." Filling this out is optional — pick any reason or skip the screen entirely.

7

Confirm and verify your end date

After confirmation, your Services & Subscriptions page shows a banner with the exact date your Game Pass ends. Billing has stopped, but full library access continues until that date. If you change your mind, the same card shows a Turn on recurring billing or Resubscribe button to reverse the cancellation before it takes effect.

If this applies to you

On Xbox console: Settings > Account > Subscriptions

If you prefer to cancel from the dashboard, press the Xbox button on your controller, then go to Profile & system > Settings > Account > Subscriptions. Select your Game Pass plan and choose Turn off recurring billing or Cancel. The flow ends with the same end-date confirmation as the web version.

If you bought through Xbox All Access or a carrier bundle

Xbox All Access is a 24-month financing plan sold by Best Buy, Amazon, and carriers (Verizon, BT, EE, etc.) that bundles a console with Game Pass Ultimate. Microsoft cannot cancel it — you have to cancel through the original retailer, and Game Pass ends when the financing contract finishes. For carrier bundles, sign in to the carrier's account portal and look for the Xbox add-on.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Once you cancel, Microsoft will not bill you again. Game Pass continues until the end of your current period — the exact end date appears on your Services & Subscriptions page banner immediately after cancellation. Microsoft does not prorate or refund unused time on the current period.

Microsoft generally does not refund partial months on Game Pass renewals, and there is no self-serve refund button. Some regions with stronger consumer protection — notably the EU, UK, and Quebec — can request a refund within a short window of the charge by contacting Xbox Support at support.xbox.com directly. Outside those regions, the closest thing to a refund is keeping access until your current period ends.

Cloud saves and achievements are tied to your Microsoft account, not your subscription — they stay forever, even if you never resubscribe. Downloaded Game Pass games stop launching once the subscription ends, but the install files remain on your console until you delete them, so resubscribing later avoids a re-download. Any game you purchased outright before canceling stays yours permanently, including titles bought with the Game Pass member discount.

Microsoft cannot cancel these — Xbox All Access is a 24-month financing contract sold through Best Buy, Amazon, or carriers like Verizon and BT, with Game Pass bundled into the monthly hardware payment. Cancel through whichever retailer sold you the console, and Game Pass automatically ends when the contract is paid off. For carrier-bundled add-ons, sign in to the carrier's account portal and look for the Xbox or Game Pass line item.

Yes — and you should set a calendar reminder if you do not plan to keep the subscription. The cancellation flow is identical to a regular cancel: Services & Subscriptions > Manage > Cancel subscription. As long as you cancel before the trial end date shown on the card, you will not be charged when the promotion converts to the full price.

Yes. Sign back in at xbox.com/xbox-game-pass and pick a tier — Microsoft sometimes shows a "win-back" discount for returning customers if you wait a few weeks. Your Microsoft account, achievements, friends list, and cloud saves are all preserved, so you pick up where you left off. Note that as of 2026, new Call of Duty titles no longer hit Game Pass Ultimate at launch — they are added roughly a year after release.
