Quick answer

Open claude.ai → Settings → Billing, click Cancel, skip the optional reason survey, then confirm with Cancel plan. You keep Claude Pro (or Max) until the end of the current billing period — cancel at least 24 hours before your renewal date or the next charge still goes through. Payments are non-refundable by default, but Claude has a self-serve refund request flow worth trying.

Wondering if you're paying more than you used to? how this compares to other subscriptions.

Step-by-step instructions

1

Open Settings, then Billing

Sign in at claude.ai (or open the desktop app), click your initials or name in the lower-left corner, and choose Settings. In the settings menu, open the Billing tab. You'll see your current plan, payment method, recent invoices, and a Cancellation section at the bottom.

2

Click Cancel to open the Cancel plan dialog

In the Cancellation section, click the red Cancel button. A Cancel plan dialog opens, headed "Cancel to stop recurring billing. You can still use Claude Pro until [your end date]." This dialog is where the cancellation actually happens — closing it does nothing.

Skip or answer the reason survey (optional)

The dialog asks "What is your main reason for canceling? (optional)". Picking a reason can reveal a follow-up text box (for example, "What made Claude's pricing unsustainable for you?") plus a general feedback field. None of it is required — you can leave everything blank and still cancel.

4

Confirm with Cancel plan, not Go back

Click the red Cancel plan button at the bottom of the dialog to finalize. The Go back button next to it is the retention default — it dismisses the dialog and leaves your subscription active. Make sure you click Cancel plan.

5

Verify the "will be canceled" banner

Back on the Billing page, a banner now reads "Your subscription will be canceled on [date]." with a Resubscribe button beside it. That banner is your proof the cancellation registered — Claude keeps working normally until that date, then drops to the free tier. No confirmation email is required to finish.

If you subscribed through the Apple App Store or Google Play

If you paid through a mobile app store, the web Billing tab may not show a Cancel button. In the Claude iOS or Android app, tap your initials in the top-right corner, tap Billing, then Manage subscription and follow the prompts. You can also cancel directly through Apple (Settings > your name > Subscriptions) or Google Play (play.google.com/store/account/subscriptions).

If you actually want money back, request a refund

Canceling stops future billing but does not refund the current period. To ask for a refund, click your initials, choose Get help, click Send us a message, pick "Claude Refund Request", select a reason, and follow the prompts for an eligibility check. Don't open a bank chargeback first — an active payment dispute blocks Anthropic from issuing the refund itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

Not for the next period, as long as you cancel at least 24 hours before your renewal date. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period, and the "will be canceled on [date]" banner shows exactly when access ends. The catch users get burned by: if you cancel within 24 hours of renewal, the next charge may already be processing — so cancel with a day to spare and check your statement.

By default no — Anthropic's policy is that "all payments are non-refundable" except where the Consumer Terms or local law require otherwise, so you keep access to the end of the period instead of getting cash back. But Claude does run a self-serve refund request: initials > Get help > Send us a message > "Claude Refund Request" > pick a reason > eligibility check. People who accidentally bought the $200 annual Pro plan instead of the $20/month one routinely get it refunded and switched to monthly. EU and UK users also have a 14-day right of withdrawal on new subscriptions. One rule: don't file a credit-card chargeback first — an open dispute stops Anthropic from refunding you directly.

Your conversation history, Projects, and Artifacts stay on your account — canceling Pro or Max just drops you to the free tier, it doesn't delete anything. What you lose on the end date is the paid capacity: the much higher usage limits, priority access during busy periods, and Pro/Max-only features. If you want your data actually removed, that's a separate account-deletion step in Settings, not part of canceling.

Claude can't cancel a subscription that an app store bills. In the Claude iOS or Android app, tap your initials (top-right) > Billing > Manage subscription. Or go straight to the store: on iPhone or iPad, Settings > [your name] > Subscriptions > Claude > Cancel Subscription; on Android, play.google.com/store/account/subscriptions. After canceling there, Claude Pro continues until the end of the period you already paid for.

Claude's Pro upgrade defaults can land you on the $200-up-front annual plan when you meant $20/month. If you catch it quickly, use the in-app refund request (initials > Get help > "Claude Refund Request") — Anthropic commonly refunds the annual charge and lets you re-subscribe monthly. The sooner you ask, the cleaner it goes; don't wait until the year is half over.

Yes. While the subscription is still in its run-out period, the Billing banner shows a Resubscribe button that reverses the cancellation in one click. After the end date, open Settings > Billing and pick a plan again — your chats, Projects, and account stay intact, so you pick up where you left off rather than starting over.
