Quick answer

Sign in at chatgpt.com, open SettingsSubscription, click ManageCancel Subscription, then confirm with Cancel subscription. You keep Plus until the end of the current billing period — OpenAI states subscription fees are non-refundable (with narrow exceptions).

Wondering if you're paying more than you used to? the price you used to pay vs the price you pay now.

Step-by-step instructions

1

Back up anything you'll lose on the Free tier

Before you cancel, export or copy anything that lives behind Plus features — long chats, Projects/folders, and any custom GPTs you built. When you drop to Free, some Plus-only surfaces can become inaccessible, and there is no undo. Do this while you still have Plus access.

2

Open your Subscription settings

Go to chatgpt.com and sign in. Click your profile icon (top right), select Settings, then open the Subscription tab. You'll see your ChatGPT Plus plan, the auto-renew date, and a Manage button.

3

Open the Manage menu and click Cancel Subscription

Click the Manage dropdown next to your plan name. A small menu opens with Upgrade plan and a red Cancel Subscription. Click Cancel Subscription.

The Manage dropdown expanded showing two options: Upgrade plan and a red Cancel Subscription with an X icon
4

Confirm in the Subscription Cancellation dialog

A dialog headed "Subscription Cancellation" explains your Plus subscription will be canceled but stays active until the end of your billing period. Click the red Cancel subscription button to finish.

5

Verify your cancellation date

A confirmation appears — "Your subscription has been canceled" — and the Subscription panel now reads "Your plan will be canceled on [date]" instead of auto-renews. That date is when Plus access ends and billing stops. Note it down.

If you subscribed through the Apple App Store or Google Play

The web Cancel button only works for subscriptions billed by OpenAI. If Apple or Google handles your billing, cancel there instead: on iPhone, Settings → your name → Subscriptions → ChatGPT → Cancel Subscription; on Android/Google, go to play.google.com/store/account/subscriptions → Manage on ChatGPT → Cancel subscription. Note: a subscription you started on chatgpt.com must be canceled on chatgpt.com, not in the app store.

Requesting a refund (optional)

OpenAI states subscription fees are non-refundable, but there are exceptions. EU, UK, and Turkey residents are eligible for a prorated refund if they cancel within 14 days of purchase. Accidental charges are generally refundable if you contact support within 14 days. For web charges, open help.openai.com while logged in and use the chat widget at the bottom right (processed in 5–7 business days; 10 for Google Play). Apple charges must be refunded through Apple.

Watch your statement for post-cancel charges

A cancellation takes effect the day after your next billing date, so you can keep using Plus until then. To be safe, cancel at least 24 hours before the renewal date. Check your card statement after the end date — a handful of users have reported charges landing after canceling or even after deleting their account. Deleting your OpenAI account also auto-cancels the subscription.

Frequently Asked Questions

No new charge should hit once you cancel — but the cancellation only takes effect the day after your next billing date, so cancel at least 24 hours before the renewal to be sure you skip the next cycle. You keep full Plus access until the end of the period you already paid for. Deleting your OpenAI account also cancels the subscription automatically. If a charge appears after your end date, contact support through the chat widget at help.openai.com.

OpenAI's policy is that subscription fees are non-refundable, with a few exceptions. If you live in the EU, UK, or Turkey, you're eligible for a prorated refund when you cancel within 14 days of purchase. Accidental charges are generally refundable if you contact support within 14 days of the charge. Request a refund by logging in at help.openai.com and using the chat widget — web refunds process in 5–7 business days, Google Play in about 10. If you were billed by Apple, refunds must go through Apple, not OpenAI.

Your conversation history stays on your account and is still readable on the Free tier. What changes is access to Plus-only capabilities: higher message limits, advanced models, and features like Projects/folders and building custom GPTs. Some users have reported that Projects and the chats organized inside them became inaccessible after dropping to Free — so export or back up anything important before your Plus period ends.

You cancel wherever your billing lives. On iPhone: Settings → your name → Subscriptions → ChatGPT → Cancel Subscription. On Google: go to play.google.com/store/account/subscriptions, click Manage on ChatGPT, then Cancel subscription. One catch — if you originally subscribed on chatgpt.com, you must cancel on chatgpt.com; the app stores won't show that subscription. Uninstalling the app never cancels billing.

ChatGPT Plus generally doesn't come with a standard free trial, so most people are on a paid month. If you're on a promotional trial or discounted first period, cancel before the renewal date using Settings → Subscription → Manage → Cancel Subscription. The cancellation takes effect the day after your next billing date, so do it at least 24 hours ahead to avoid the charge.

Yes. Your account and chat history stay intact, so you can restart anytime from Settings → Subscription → Manage → Upgrade plan (or the "Upgrade" prompt in the app). Plus is $20/month billed monthly. Restarting restores Plus features immediately — there's no waiting period and you don't create a new account.
