Open your GitHub billing settings

Sign in at github.com, click your profile picture, then Settings. In the Access section of the sidebar, open Billing & licensing, then Licensing (new billing platform) or Plans and usage (original). You can also jump in via github.com/settings/billing or github.com/settings/copilot.

Find GitHub Copilot and start cancel

On a paid plan, open the Manage subscription dropdown next to GitHub Copilot and click Cancel subscription. During a free trial, you'll see a red Cancel trial button instead — same destination: a confirmation modal. Org or enterprise seats won't show a personal cancel control (see optional steps).

Skip the "lose these benefits" pitch

The cancel modal opens with a yellow "Are you sure…" warning and a list of features you'll lose (code completion languages, IDE support). On a trial it also states how many days remain and that you can cancel without charges. Scroll past the scare list — you still need the final confirm button at the bottom.

Skip the exit survey (optional answers)

GitHub asks for user type, IDE, languages, experience, and why you're leaving. None of it is required to finish canceling. Leave everything blank or answer quickly — either way, keep scrolling to the confirm button.

Ignore the reason checkboxes if you want

Further down, GitHub lists reasons like "It's too expensive," "I found an alternative," or "I have access through my company," plus a free-text box. Filling them out is optional product feedback, not a gate on cancellation.

Confirm the cancellation

Click the red confirm control at the bottom of the modal. On a trial it reads I understand, cancel GitHub Copilot trial. On a paid plan, GitHub Docs say to choose Cancel Copilot Pro, Cancel Copilot Pro+, or Cancel Copilot Max so the plan ends at the close of your current billing cycle.

Verify the end date on your billing page

You should land back on Plans and usage (or Licensing) with a banner confirming the cancel and the date paid access ends. Until that date you keep current plan features; afterward GitHub moves you to Copilot Free automatically. IDE extensions stay installed — they just run under Free limits.

If this applies to you

If Copilot is billed through your organization

Personal Cancel subscription won't appear when a Business or Enterprise seat covers you — only an org owner can remove seats or disable Copilot for the organization. Conversely, if a client or employer assigns you a Business/Enterprise seat while you still pay personally, GitHub auto-cancels the personal plan and issues a prorated refund for the unused portion of that cycle.

If this applies to you

If you have free student, teacher, or OSS access

Verified students, teachers, and maintainers of popular open source projects often can't cancel through billing UI because there is no paid subscription. To stop suggestions, disable Copilot in your IDE or account policies instead of looking for Cancel subscription.

Don't confuse this with Microsoft Copilot Pro

A charge labeled "Copilot" on a card may be Microsoft Copilot Pro (Microsoft 365 / copilot.microsoft.com), which cancels at account.microsoft.com/services — not on GitHub. If github.com/settings/billing shows no Copilot plan, check your Microsoft account subscriptions (and Apple/Google if you bought there) before disputing the charge.

After cancel: Copilot Free and AI credits

When the cycle ends you keep a GitHub account with Copilot Free: up to 2,000 code completions per month and a limited AI-credits allowance with auto model selection only. Included monthly AI credits reset at 00:00 UTC on the first calendar day of each month — canceling or renewing mid-month does not refresh that allowance early.

Frequently Asked Questions

No further renewals should process after a successful cancel. You keep Pro / Pro+ / Max features until the end date shown on the confirmation banner, then drop to Copilot Free. If a charge still posts, confirm you canceled the GitHub plan (not only Microsoft Copilot) and contact GitHub Support with the banner date and invoice.

For a normal personal cancel or downgrade, GitHub's docs say access continues until the billing cycle ends and there is no refund for unused time. The documented exception is when a Copilot Business or Enterprise seat is assigned while you still have an active personal Pro / Pro+ / Max plan — that personal plan is auto-canceled with a prorated refund for the remainder of the cycle. EU and UK consumers may also have a 14-day withdrawal right on new distance contracts; ask Support if that applies to your purchase.

VS Code, Visual Studio, JetBrains, and Neovim extensions stay installed. After the paid period ends they run under Copilot Free limits (completion cap, limited chat/agent, auto models only). Editor settings and local history are not wiped by canceling; cloud chat/thread retention follows GitHub's product behavior for Free vs paid, not a separate "delete on cancel" wipe.

You can't cancel an organization or enterprise seat yourself. An organization owner must remove Copilot seats or disable Copilot Business for the org (Billing & licensing → Licensing / Copilot Access → Disabled → Confirm and remove seats). If you also pay for a personal plan, cancel that separately under your own Billing & licensing — unless the org already auto-canceled it when they assigned your seat.

Yes. Use Cancel trial on the Copilot billing card, skip or fill the survey, and click I understand, cancel GitHub Copilot trial. During the trial GitHub states you can cancel without charges; confirm the banner date so the trial does not convert to the paid monthly price. The flow matches a paid cancel, but the button labels say "trial."

Yes. After the cancel takes effect (or once you're on Free), go back to GitHub's Copilot plan pages and subscribe to Pro, Pro+, or Max again. Your GitHub account and repos are unchanged. Note that converting from a trial, resuming after a lapse, or changing plans does not immediately reset the calendar-month AI credits allowance — that still flips on the 1st UTC.
