Step-by-step instructions

1

Sign in on the web

Open Contra in a browser and sign in to the Independent account that pays for Pro. Cancellation is self-serve on the website under Settings → Subscription — not by ending a client project, and not by deleting the app or closing a tab.

2

Open Settings → Subscription

Go to contra.com/settings/subscription (or open Settings from your account menu and click Subscription). You should see your Contra PRO card with a CURRENT PLAN badge, the price, and the next renew date.

3

Click Manage subscription

On the Contra PRO card, click Manage subscription. A small menu opens with Manage billing information and Cancel subscription.

4

Choose Cancel subscription

Click Cancel subscription in that menu. Contra opens a confirmation modal titled "Are you sure you want to cancel?" with the date your Pro access ends if you proceed.

5

Skip the "You will lose" list

The modal lists Pro perks with red X marks — Job Network access, priority applications, waived platform fees for invited clients, branded invoices, AI portfolio, and premium templates. That list is a retention screen. Click the red Continue canceling button — not Return to settings.

6

Verify the cancel took

After Continue canceling, return to Settings → Subscription and confirm auto-renew is off and the end date matches what the modal showed. Contra's terms say termination keeps access through the end of the paid term and stops renewal — cancel before that renew date if you want to avoid another charge.

7

Keep using Pro until the term ends

You keep Pro features (priority applications, analytics, fee discounts, templates) through the period you already paid for. Use them while they last — Contra does not refund unused days on monthly or annual plans.

8

After Pro expires, Subscription shows Go PRO

When the paid term ends, Settings → Subscription switches to the Free upgrade card with Upgrade to Pro. That is normal — your Independent profile remains; only Pro extras are gone until you subscribe again.

Do not delete your account to stop Pro

Canceling Pro is Manage subscription → Cancel subscription. Deleting the account is a different Settings path that ends with Permanently delete account and removes the profile. Use cancel if you only want to stop renewals.

If this applies to you

Canceling a project is not canceling Pro

Ending a client project (End project on that project) stops that engagement's workflow. It does not cancel Contra Pro billing. If the renew charge is what you want to stop, use Subscription → Cancel subscription.

Billing portal as a backup path

The Subscription page also links to a subscription and billing management portal (Stripe-style) for payment updates. Prefer Cancel subscription in the Manage subscription menu so you see Contra's confirm modal and end date. If the in-app Cancel control is missing, use the portal or email hello@contra.com.

Frequently Asked Questions

No further renewals should post after a successful cancel. Contra's Terms say cancellation stops auto-renewal and you keep access through the end of the paid term. Confirm the end date on Settings → Subscription after you click Continue canceling, and cancel before the renew date if you want to avoid the next charge.

Contra's Terms state that annual and monthly subscriptions are nonrefundable. A mid-cycle cancel means access until the paid term ends — not cash back for unused days. EU and UK consumers may still have a 14-day right of withdrawal on a new subscription under local law. For billing disputes, Contra points Independents to hello@contra.com; treat that as support, not a published refund window.

Canceling Pro does not delete your Independent account. Your profile, portfolio, contracts, and project history stay on Free. When the paid term ends you lose Pro-only extras (priority applications, Pro analytics, fee discounts, premium templates, and similar). Deleting the account is a separate, permanent action — do not use it just to stop Pro billing.

No. Ending a project stops that client engagement on the platform. Contra Pro is a separate membership billed under Settings → Subscription. Only Cancel subscription (or the billing portal) stops the Pro renew charge.

Contra's published Pro help describes paid monthly ($29/mo) or yearly ($199/yr) billing — not a standing free trial. If you only wanted one month (or one year), cancel in Subscription before the renew date shown on your CURRENT PLAN card. Annual plans are nonrefundable for unused months, so cancel before renewal if you do not want another year.

Yes. After Pro ends, Settings → Subscription shows Upgrade to Pro (or you can start from contra.com/pro / contra.com/pricing). Your Free profile and portfolio are still there — you are not starting from a blank account. Pick monthly or annual billing when you are ready.
