A 12-step walkthrough with real screenshots from the live cancel flow.
This cancels a Monzo paid plan — Extra, Perks or Max — not your Monzo account, which stays open and free. It is app-only: open your plan's tab, scroll to Settings at the bottom, tap the red Cancel {plan}, scroll the "Here's what you'll lose" sheet to the end, then confirm with Yes, cancel {plan}. Monzo publishes a shortcut that opens the same screen: monzo.com/-deeplinks/cancel-paid. Your benefits run to your next payment date and there is no refund. Leaving Extra is free with no minimum term; Perks and Max can claw back £23 for a Railcard you claimed and £5 for a plan card you ordered, and Max locks you in for 3 months.
The next renewal is the one you won't. RecurDash keeps the list and emails you before each charge lands.
No bank login.
Wondering if you're paying more than you used to? the price you used to pay vs the price you pay now.
See Monzo's pricing, tiers, and difficulty score in one page. Monzo ranks #1 of 235 by cancellation difficulty.
Monzo runs a different exit regime on every plan and shows you none of it until you are inside the flow. <strong>Extra</strong> (£3/mo): no fee, no minimum term, leave whenever. <strong>Perks</strong> (£7/mo): no minimum term, but if you claimed the annual Railcard you owe <strong>£1.92 for every month left</strong> until your Perks anniversary. <strong>Max</strong> (£17/mo, £22 with Family): a <strong>3-month minimum term</strong> you cannot cancel inside, plus the same Railcard fee. On any plan, cancelling in the first <strong>14 days</strong> refunds your monthly payment but costs <strong>£23</strong> if you claimed a Railcard and <strong>£5</strong> if you ordered a plan card.
There is no web route. Monzo has no account area on monzo.com where you can drop a plan, and every one of its own cancellation help pages ends by sending you to an app link. Sign in with the email address you joined with.
Your plan gets its own tab in the bottom navigation bar, named after the plan — <strong>Extra</strong>, <strong>Perks</strong> or <strong>Max</strong>. Tap it and scroll all the way down, past the benefit list, to a small block containing <strong>Settings</strong> and <strong>Give us feedback</strong>.
The Settings screen is short: <strong>Extra terms and conditions</strong>, <strong>Privacy notice</strong>, <strong>Fee information</strong>, and then a separate card holding a single red row, <strong>Cancel Extra</strong> (or Cancel Perks / Cancel Max). Tap the red one.
A sheet slides up headed <strong>Here's what you'll lose</strong>, with the exact date your benefits stop and a list of everything attached to the plan — connected banks, credit insights, virtual cards, advanced roundups, custom categories, auto-spreadsheet, fee-free allowances. The confirm button at the bottom is greyed out and the sheet reads <strong>Scroll to continue</strong>. You have to read to the end before Monzo will let you proceed.
Below the benefit list, an <strong>If you cancel</strong> block flags two consequences with red crosses: <strong>"Online subscriptions could fail"</strong> if you pay for them using virtual cards, and <strong>"We'll remove other accounts"</strong>, meaning connected banks disappear from the app. The <strong>Cancel Extra</strong> button is now active. Before you tap it, go and check which of your subscriptions bill to a Monzo virtual card.
A final action sheet asks <strong>"Are you sure you want to cancel?"</strong> and repeats the end date. Tap <strong>Yes, cancel Extra</strong>. The other button, <strong>No, keep Extra</strong>, sits below it — the labels are plain and the styling does not try to trick you into the wrong one.
A full-screen <strong>Cancelled Extra</strong> confirmation gives you the date your benefits actually stop, which is your next payment date, not today. It also notes that you can ask for the plan back at any time. Tap <strong>Got it</strong>. Monzo will then prompt you to order a replacement Hot Coral card if you were using a Perks, Max, Plus or Premium card — those stop working with the plan.
After the first 14 days, Max cannot be cancelled at all until the 3 months are up — not through the app, not through support — unless you meet one of three exception criteria: financial hardship from a change in circumstances (bankruptcy, an IVA, a debt relief order), a serious physical or mental health condition or lack of mental capacity to manage your finances, or no longer being a UK resident. If one applies, contact Monzo through in-app chat and supply evidence. Otherwise you keep paying £17 a month until the term ends, then cancel normally.
There is no downgrade flow. Monzo says it plainly: there is no way to move from Max to Perks or Extra, or from Perks to Extra — you cancel the plan, wait for it to end, then sign up to the cheaper one from scratch. Your virtual cards and custom categories are frozen rather than deleted in the gap and come back when you re-subscribe. Two things soften it: moving Max to Perks avoids the Railcard fee entirely as long as you keep Perks past the date your Max anniversary would have fallen on, and if you are charged a Railcard fee, Monzo may refund it if you take out Perks or Max within 30 days.
Monzo stopped selling Plus and Premium. You can keep yours indefinitely, but its own help pages warn that if you cancel <em>"even by accident"</em> you cannot sign back up — and moving to Extra, Perks or Max burns it just the same. The fee schedule is different too: <strong>Plus</strong> charges £5 to cancel inside its 3-month minimum term, and £5 for the holographic blue card if you ordered one. <strong>Premium</strong> has a <strong>6-month</strong> minimum term and a <strong>£50</strong> fee if you ordered the metal card, though it is the one Monzo plan that refunds you for the remaining days of the month.
Cancelling a plan does not close anything — your current account, card, balance and statements all stay. Closing the account is a separate job, and cancelling the plan is a prerequisite for it, so the steps above come first either way. You also need to empty and close any savings or investment pots. Afterwards you must wait at least 30 days to reopen, and Monzo states there is no guarantee it will let you. Download the statements you need before you go.
RecurDash keeps track of what you're paying for and emails you before each renewal — so the next cancellation happens on your schedule, not after the charge. No bank login required.
