A 14-step walkthrough.
Shopify has no separate cancel-subscription button: canceling your plan deactivates the store. Sign in as the store owner, open Settings > Plan, click Cancel plan, skip the downgrade and Pause and build options, select Cancel my plan and uninstall all apps, then confirm with your password. The store closes at the end of your current billing cycle. Plan fees are generally non-refundable, and pending app, transaction and shipping-label charges are billed right away.
The next renewal is the one you won't. RecurDash keeps the list and emails you before each charge lands.
No account, no bank login.

See Shopify's pricing, tiers, and difficulty score in one page. Shopify ranks #24 of 246 by cancellation difficulty.
Before you close, export CSV files of your products, customers, orders, gift card codes, discount codes and financial data from the Shopify admin, and download your billing history from Settings > Billing. If you bought a theme, download a backup of it too: themes are licensed only to the store you bought them for. Shopify keeps a deactivated store's information for 2 years, but after the cycle ends you lose admin access to it.
Canceling your store does not cancel domain renewals. If a domain you bought through Shopify renews before your store's close date, you can still be charged the renewal fee, so turn off auto-renewal in your Shopify domain settings or transfer the domain to another registrar if you want to keep it. For a domain registered elsewhere, remove it from your store, then turn off auto-renewal and update its DNS at your registrar.
Apps billed through your Shopify invoice are uninstalled automatically when you cancel, and their billing stops once the store is deactivated. Some third-party apps charge your card directly instead, and uninstalling them from the admin does not cancel that separate subscription. Check each paid app's billing settings, or use Get support on its App Store listing, and cancel the external plan before you deactivate.
Only the store owner can cancel. Staff accounts can't, and you'll need to pass any two-step authentication check. Go to admin.shopify.com/settings/plan, or in the Shopify mobile app tap the menu, then Settings, then Plan. Stores on Shopify Plus cancel through Shopify Plus Support instead.
On the Plan page, click Cancel plan if you're on a paid plan, or Cancel trial if you're still in your free trial. Shopify may ask for your password at this point. Older help articles and forum answers call this button "Deactivate store"; the current label is Cancel plan.
Shopify first offers to downgrade your plan, switch you to the Pause and build plan, or start a new store. Pause and build costs $9 USD a month, keeps your admin and storefront online, and turns checkout off across every sales channel. Your apps stay active and keep billing, and when you come back you have to pick a new plan because the old one no longer applies. If you're leaving Shopify, skip all three.
The next screen lists your Shopify-managed domains and any pending charges. If you still want to leave, select Cancel my plan and uninstall all apps, then click Continue. Every app is uninstalled at this point, and pending charges such as app usage fees, transaction fees and shipping labels are charged immediately.
Select a reason for leaving, add a comment if you want, and click Continue. Shopify offers an optional Save payment details to reopen your store faster checkbox, which you can leave unticked. Enter your password, then click Cancel plan (or Cancel trial) to finish.
Shopify emails you to confirm the store is deactivated. The store keeps running until the end of your current billing cycle: cancel today with a cycle that ends on November 25, and the store closes on November 25. Until then you can undo it from Settings > Plan by clicking Reactivate plan. If you don't want new orders in the final days, turn on password protection for your online store.
If you owe anything when the store closes, Shopify sends one final invoice by email, and once it's paid you shouldn't be charged again. Invoices can still arrive afterwards for charges billed outside Shopify, for chargebacks on past orders, or for another Shopify store you own. Any pending Shopify Payments payouts are still sent to your bank, but you won't have admin access to fix a failed payout or contest a chargeback unless you reopen the store.
If you never picked a plan, you don't need to do anything: when the trial ends the store is paused and you aren't charged. If you picked a plan during the trial, including the $1/month for 3 months offer, you have to cancel manually with Cancel trial or Cancel plan. When the offer ends, the store switches to your plan's standard monthly price (Basic is $39/month), and charges from the promotional period aren't refundable if you deactivate.
Annual billing charges the full year upfront, and canceling takes effect at the end of your current billing cycle, which on an annual plan is the prepaid year. The store stays open until then; the unused months are not refunded. Shopify only reviews refund requests on an annual invoice within 30 days of the invoice date. Switching from annual to monthly billing generally has to go through Shopify Support and only takes effect when the annual cycle ends.
Every Shopify store is billed separately, and one email address can own several. You get a confirmation email for each store you deactivate, so if you have that email and are still being billed, another store or an externally billed app is the likely source. The Forgot your store? tool at accounts.shopify.com/recovery/stores lists stores tied to your email, and your billing emails should name the store they're for.
By default Shopify keeps a deactivated store's information for 2 years so you can reopen it. The store owner can ask Shopify Support to delete customers' personal data sooner, but only once the store is deactivated. Deletion happens within 14 days of the request, can't be undone, and means the store can never be reopened.
RecurDash keeps track of what you're paying for and emails you before each renewal — so the next cancellation happens on your schedule, not after the charge. No bank login required.
