Quick answer

In Shopify admin go to Sales channels → Point of Sale, open SettingsPoint of Sale subscriptions, set each location to Lite (or click Cancel POS ProConfirm downgrade). This stops the POS Pro add-on only — not your core Shopify plan. Downgrades apply at the start of the next POS billing cycle.

Step-by-step instructions

1

Know what you're canceling

This guide downgrades Shopify POS Pro (the paid per-location retail add-on) back to POS Lite. POS Lite stays included with any paid Shopify plan at no extra POS fee. It does not cancel Basic, Grow, Advanced, or Plus — that is a separate plan change under store Settings. You also do not need to close your Shopify store to stop POS Pro charges.

2

Open Point of Sale Settings

Sign in to Shopify admin as the account owner. Under Sales channels, click Point of Sale, then Settings. You should see sections for Orders, Subscriptions, and Extensions.

Shopify Point of Sale Settings page with a Subscriptions card labeled Point of Sale subscriptions and the description Manage your POS subscriptions
3

Open Point of Sale subscriptions

Click Point of Sale subscriptions (Shopify help also labels this path Settings → POS Pro Subscription or Settings → Subscriptions). You land on Locations / Manage subscriptions with POS Lite and POS Pro cards.

Choose POS Subscription screen on Monthly billing with POS Lite Included and a Choose Lite button next to a POS Pro card showing a promotional $1 USD/month offer and Choose Pro
4

Skip the Yearly upsell toggle

The Monthly / Yearly control only changes how POS Pro is priced if you stay on Pro. Switching to Yearly is a 12-month commitment, not a cancel path. Leave the toggle alone and continue toward Lite for each location you want to stop billing.

Choose POS Subscription screen with the Yearly toggle selected, POS Lite still Included with Choose Lite, and POS Pro showing a discounted monthly rate in addition to the Shopify plan
5

Set each Pro location to Lite

Scroll to Review POS subscriptions for each location. Every location still on Pro shows a PRO badge (and TRIAL if you are in a trial). Select Lite for each location you want to downgrade. For a single location, Shopify help documents Cancel POS Pro → Confirm downgrade; for many locations you can multi-select and click Downgrade (up to 250 at a time).

Review POS subscriptions for each location listing a Menlo Park address with gold PRO and TRIAL badges and Lite versus Pro radio options, with Cancel and Next buttons at the bottom
6

Confirm the downgrade

Click Next (or Confirm downgrade on the Cancel POS Pro modal). Shopify applies POS Pro changes at the start of the next 30-day POS app billing cycle, which is separate from your Shopify plan bill. Stay on the page until the location no longer shows Pro as the active choice.

7

Double-check every location before a trial ends

Re-open Manage subscriptions and confirm each location you meant to stop shows Lite — not PRO or TRIAL. Downgrading your core Shopify plan does not cancel POS Pro by itself. If a free trial of POS Pro is about to end, finish this check before the trial date so it does not convert to a paid Pro charge.

If this applies to you

If you are on POS Pro yearly

Yearly POS Pro is billed monthly at the discounted rate for a renewable 12-month term. Canceling early can require paying the remaining months of that term. To avoid auto-renewal of another year (including the discount), cancel in admin or via Shopify Support before the renewal window — Shopify’s yearly terms require at least 7 calendar days’ notice before the term ends.

If this applies to you

Ask for a refund only inside the window

Shopify documents POS Pro refunds only if you downgrade within 7 days of the monthly billing-cycle start, or within 30 days of the annual billing date. After those windows you are not eligible for a prorated refund. EU/UK consumers may still have a 14-day withdrawal right on a new subscription under local law — that is separate from Shopify’s self-serve windows.

If this applies to you

Uninstall the POS channel only if you are leaving POS

Downgrading to Lite stops Pro charges while you can still sell in person on included features. If you want the Point of Sale sales channel gone entirely, downgrade every Pro location first, then use the channel menu → Uninstall. Uninstalling without downgrading Pro leaves subscription risk on the table.

Core Shopify plan is a different cancel path

Stopping POS Pro does not cancel Basic, Grow, Advanced, or Plus. To change or cancel the store plan, use Settings → Plan (or the Change plan link on the POS banner). Closing the whole Shopify account is harder to reverse and is not required to end POS Pro.

Frequently Asked Questions

Not for future POS Pro cycles on locations you confirmed as Lite, once the downgrade takes effect at the start of the next POS app billing cycle. Shopify bills POS Pro on its own 30-day cycle, separate from your Shopify plan. Any location you leave on Pro still renews. Your core Shopify plan keeps billing until you change that plan separately.

Shopify’s help center says refunds are available only if you downgrade within 7 days of the monthly billing-cycle start, or within 30 days of the annual billing date — after that, no prorated refund. You do not need to cancel your Shopify store to request a POS Pro refund. On POS Pro yearly, canceling before the 12-month term ends can require paying the remaining monthly fees. EU/UK 14-day withdrawal may apply to new subscriptions depending on your situation.

Downgrading to POS Lite does not delete your Shopify admin, locations, inventory, or order history. You lose Pro-only features (unlimited POS staff roles, advanced omnichannel tools, Pro reports, and similar) when the change takes effect, and keep the in-person selling features included with your paid Shopify plan. Hardware you bought or received under a yearly offer is generally yours to keep even if you do not renew Pro — check the offer terms you accepted.

POS Pro is charged per location. Set Lite (or Cancel POS Pro → Confirm downgrade) on every location you want stopped. On the POS Pro Subscription page you can multi-select locations and click Downgrade for up to 250 at a time. You cannot transfer a Pro seat from one location to another yourself — canceling one and adding another bills both; contact Shopify Support for a transfer.

Yes — and you should confirm the location is Lite before the trial end date. After the trial, locations that are not selected for Pro revert to included in-person features only if Pro was never approved; if Pro converts to paid, you need the downgrade flow. Do not assume changing your core Shopify plan also cancels the POS Pro trial.

Yes. Return to Point of Sale → Settings → Point of Sale subscriptions (or POS Pro Subscription), choose Pro for the location, and approve the subscription. Pricing is again the current per-location Pro rate (month-to-month or yearly term). Your catalog and history remain on the store unless you closed the Shopify account.
