A 9-step walkthrough with real screenshots from the live cancel flow.
bunq has no cancel button for a paid plan: you switch to bunq Free, and only in the app. Tap your profile, then Plan, Switch Plan, and pick bunq Free (bunq's own steps). The switch starts when your current billing cycle ends, and plan fees already paid are not refunded. New personal accounts start on a 30-day bunq Elite trial that continues at €18.99 a month unless you switch. In a bunq Pack, Leave Pack moves you to bunq Pro at €9.99 a month, not to Free, so switch plans after that. Close Account on the same screen closes your whole account, which is a separate decision.
The next renewal is the one you won't. RecurDash keeps the list and emails you before each charge lands.
No account, no bank login.

Plan changes happen in the bunq mobile app only. bunq Web, the browser version, has no plan switch, and bunq's help center points you to the mobile app for anything bunq Web lacks. Open the app, tap your profile (top-left in the current app), then tap the Plan row, which shows the name of the plan you are on.
The My Plan screen puts Switch Plan at the top. Below it, in red, you may see Leave Pack (only if you are in a bunq Pack) and Close Account. Tap Switch Plan. Close Account does not end a plan: it closes your whole bunq account and blocks payments in and out, which is covered in the last step of this guide.
Choose bunq Free from the plan list and confirm. Free includes 3 Bank Accounts and 1 digital card, and no physical card, so the app asks you to freeze your physical cards; any card above the new plan's limit stops working until you move back to a plan that includes it. bunq says your account has to fit the new plan's allowance, so check how many Bank Accounts and cards you have active, and keep at least one active Bank Account to act as the billing account. If you want to keep a physical card, bunq Core at €3.99 a month is the cheapest paid plan.
The switch is not instant. Your new plan starts when the current billing cycle ends, so you keep the paid plan until then, and the fee for that month stays paid: bunq charges plan fees monthly in advance and its terms call them non-refundable. The only change that happens straight away is an upgrade from bunq Free. If you need the switch sooner, bunq says to ask Support in the app.
Every new personal account starts on bunq Elite free for 30 days, counted from your signup date. If you do not switch, it continues at €18.99 a month. Switch to Free during the trial and bunq charges the new plan only after the trial ends, which for Free is nothing. bunq does move an unused trial to Free by itself, but only if all of its conditions hold, among them no outgoing payments, a positive savings balance, no physical card ordered, no Joint Account you own and no linked Child Account. One card order or one payment and you stay on Elite. bunq says it sends an in-app notice a few days before the trial ends; at least one user on r/bunq says theirs came only after the charge, so switch as soon as you know you want Free. If you were already charged, ask Support in the in-app chat: bunq refunds the most recent plan invoice if you have been billed for a plan 3 times or fewer and have never had a plan refund before.
Picking a cheaper plan inside a Pack does not lower the Pack fee, so to stop paying for the Pack you have to leave it. Tap the red Leave Pack button on the My Plan screen and confirm on the sheet that slides up. Leaving does not drop you to Free: bunq's terms say that if you leave a Pack, or its owner ends it, you become a bunq Pro user on regular pricing, €9.99 a month billed to you, and your billing date may change. If you own the Pack, ending it stops the €28.99 fee but moves every member onto bunq Pro at €9.99 each once the Pack ends, so tell them first.
bunq confirms the exit on a full-screen notice that names the date your Pack subscription stays active until. In the 2024 version of this flow the Pack ran to that date and the account moved to the next plan afterwards. bunq's current help center does not spell out that timing for a member who leaves, so treat the date on your own screen as the one that counts. The plan named on the 2024 screen no longer exists; under today's terms the next plan is bunq Pro.
Back on My Plan, the end-date notice sits above a blue Keep using bunq Pack button, with the Switch Plan row still underneath. Use Switch Plan now to pick bunq Free, so you are not left paying €9.99 a month for bunq Pro once the Pack ends. If the app will not offer Free yet (one Pack member on r/bunq saw only the end date and no other plan), ask Support in the app to set the plan for you; bunq says Support helps when a plan change cannot wait for the end of a billing cycle.
Switching to Free keeps your account open at no monthly cost. To close it instead, go to Profile, Plan, tap Close Account and confirm with Close my account. That stops monthly fees and blocks payments, but it is reversible: you can still log in, export statements and reactivate later, and you cannot open a new bunq account with the same credentials. You cannot close with more than €15 of debt, or with a Dutch Switch Service running from another bank to bunq. Closing a Business account leaves your Personal account open. If you share a Joint Account, empty it first: bunq's terms say a joint account must be closed once any co-owner leaves. For permanent closure, ask Support in the app with your balance at exactly €0.00 and a confirmed email address, and export every statement first; after permanent closure your first statement request is free and each one after that costs €100.
RecurDash keeps track of what you're paying for and emails you before each renewal — so the next cancellation happens on your schedule, not after the charge. No bank login required.
