Quick answer

In the Dave app, go to Settings, scroll down and tap Membership, then cancel your paid membership (Dave's steps). Do it at least 3 business days before your next fee: the fee and the app's services stop at the end of the month you've paid for, and your Dave bank accounts stay open until you close them separately. If the screen offers only Pause membership, that isn't a cancel. Dave's terms also let you cancel by emailing support@dave.com. Deleting the app cancels nothing.

Dave was the one you remembered

The next renewal is the one you won't. RecurDash keeps the list and emails you before each charge lands.

Step-by-step instructions

1

Open Settings in the Dave app and tap Membership

Dave's help center puts the cancel in the app: go to Settings, scroll down and tap Membership (in 2024 screens it sat under Info, next to Linked banks and cards and Edit profile). There's no cancel page on dave.com. Dave debits the fee from your linked bank account or card under a recurring payment authorization, not through the App Store or Google Play, so it won't show up in your phone's subscriptions list. The Membership screen shows your Next bill date, Bill amount, Schedule and Payment method. Dave says you must cancel at least 3 business days before the next fee is charged, so check that date first. Deleting the app doesn't end the membership or the fee.

Cancel the paid membership, then check the screen again

Choose the option on the Membership screen that cancels your paid Dave Membership and confirm it. Dave's help article doesn't name the button, so go by what your screen says. Dave says the fee stops, along with ExtraCash, budgeting alerts and the app's other services, at the end of your last paid membership month, and an unpaid ExtraCash balance doesn't stop you ending the fee. Your Dave Checking and other Dave bank accounts stay open until you close them separately. Afterwards, go back to Settings, then Membership, and make sure it no longer shows a next bill date. If it still does, email support@dave.com before that date.

If there's no cancel option in the app, cancel by email

Dave's Terms of Use (section 7.2) say you can cancel "at any time on the Dave Mobile App or by emailing support@dave.com", with the same deadline of at least 3 business days before the next fee. Write from the email address on your Dave account, say you are cancelling your paid Dave Membership and want the recurring membership fee stopped, and ask for a written confirmation. Keep the sent email, because it records the date you cancelled. Never email a full Social Security number, a password or a card number.

If you'd rather pause than cancel (Dave doesn't document it)

In the 2024 screens, tapping Pause membership opens "Pause your membership?" with the line "This will pause your $1 per month Dave membership." and two buttons, Go back and Pause membership. Dave's help center has no article on pausing, only on cancelling, so there are no published rules on how long a pause lasts or what it keeps. You stay a member while paused. If you're leaving Dave, cancel instead.

Pause your membership? dialog over the Dave Membership screen in 2024, reading "This will pause your $1 per month Dave membership." with a Go back link and an outlined Pause membership button; behind it the membership is still ACTIVE with Next bill date Oct 21, 2024 and Bill amount $1.00

Check a paused membership reads PAUSED with a $0.00 bill

After you confirm, a green "Membership paused." banner appears, the status changes from ACTIVE to PAUSED, Bill amount reads $0.00 and the next bill date disappears. The only button left is Resume membership. The note above it, in the 2024 screens, says resuming charges $1 per month to the linked bank account starting on the bill date shown before the pause. Members who joined from mid-2025 pay $3 a month, so the figure on your screen may differ.

If you also want to close your Dave bank accounts

Cancelling the membership leaves Dave Checking and your other Dave accounts open. To close them, first move any balance to your external bank (Dave mails a check for anything left behind), download your tax documents from Settings, and settle any unsettled balance such as an ExtraCash advance. Then go to Settings, Edit profile, Close my Dave Account. Closing disconnects your linked banks and debit cards and cancels your Dave debit card, and Dave sends a final statement the following month. To close one account but stay with Dave, Dave says to use Chat with us in Settings. If you leave Dave Checking open but unused, both of Dave's checking account agreements allow a $5 monthly inactivity fee after 12 months with no deposits or withdrawals.

If Dave keeps charging you after you cancel

First check what the debit is for. Dave's terms let it retry a failed membership fee or collect it together with the following month's fee, so a debit right after you cancel can be an earlier month that bounced, and ExtraCash repayments and overdraft fees are separate from the membership. If it's a new membership fee after a cancel made in time, email support@dave.com with the date you cancelled. The CFPB says you can also tell your bank, then confirm in writing, that you have revoked the company's permission to take automatic payments; once both the company and the bank know, later payments are errors your bank can refund. Stopping a payment doesn't cancel what you owe, so an ExtraCash balance still has to be repaid. Removing your card in the app or getting a new card is not a cancellation: Dave's help says it bills the fee to "any of the available methods", and a Reddit user who switched debit cards found the next membership fee charged to the new one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Not for the membership, as long as you cancel at least 3 business days before your next fee. Dave says cancelling stops the fee at the end of your last paid membership month, and that until you cancel it keeps billing every month on the date you joined. Cancel later than 3 business days before that date and Dave's help says you'll be billed for the following month. Two other things can still debit you: an earlier fee that failed, which Dave's terms let it collect with the following month's, and ExtraCash repayments or overdraft fees, which are separate from the membership. Deleting the app or removing your card doesn't stop the fee.

Dave's help articles and Terms of Use don't offer refunds of membership fees already charged: cancelling stops future fees from the end of the month you've paid for. Dave is a US-only service, so the EU and UK 14-day withdrawal rules don't apply. If you were charged after cancelling in time, email support@dave.com with the date you cancelled and keep the email. The CFPB says that once you've told both the company and your bank that you've revoked the payment authorization, any later payment is an error your bank can refund.

Your Dave bank accounts stay open. Dave treats cancelling the membership and closing your bank accounts as two separate things. What stops at the end of your last paid month is the membership's services, ExtraCash included. An unpaid ExtraCash balance doesn't stop you cancelling ("you can end your paid Dave Membership fee at any time"), but it has to be settled before Dave will close your bank accounts. An unused Dave Checking account can draw a $5 monthly inactivity fee after 12 months with no deposits or withdrawals, so close it if you're done with Dave.

Dave's app has offered a Pause membership button: screens captured in 2024 show it setting the bill to $0.00 and leaving the membership marked PAUSED until you tap Resume membership. Dave's help center doesn't mention pausing at all, so there are no published rules on how long a pause lasts or whether it keeps your rate. In 2024 one Reddit user said Dave support told them by email to pause in the app to stop the $1 charge. If you're done with Dave, cancel, because that is the route Dave's help and terms describe.

Dave's SEC filings say it raised the monthly fee from $1 to $3 for new members in June 2025 and kept members who enrolled before that at their existing rate. Neither the filings nor Dave's help center say what happens to a $1 member who cancels and later signs up again. If the $1 rate matters to you, ask support@dave.com before you cancel. Rejoining itself is open: Dave's help says you can sign up for the paid membership anytime in the Membership settings.

Yes, and the case is still pending. In November 2024 the FTC sued Dave in federal court in the Central District of California (FTC v. Dave Inc., No. 2:24-cv-09566), and on December 30, 2024 the Justice Department filed an amended complaint that also names CEO Jason Wilk. It alleges that Dave enrolled customers in recurring monthly membership fees without clearly disclosing the terms and "without providing a simple mechanism for consumers to cancel those recurring fees", in violation of the Restore Online Shoppers' Confidence Act. The FTC's complaint also alleges that cancelling took at least nine steps from the app's main screen. These are allegations, not findings. On its August 5, 2026 earnings call, Dave said it had "no updates" and would "continue to vigorously defend" its position.
