Quick answer

Open Settings → Subscription on the web or desktop app, click Cancel trial (or Cancel plan on a paid plan), skip the "Before you go" retention modal with Cancel subscription, then fill the required reason field and confirm. A cancelled trial is never charged — you keep access until the trial end date, then drop to the free Beginner plan with all your data intact.

Wondering if you're paying more than you used to? how subscription prices have changed since 2021.

Step-by-step instructions

1

Open Subscription settings on web or desktop

Sign in at todoist.com, click your avatar in the top-left, choose Settings, then select Subscription. The Subscription tab only appears in the web and desktop apps — you can't reach it from the iOS or Android app.

2

Click Cancel trial

On a trial, the button reads Cancel trial; on a paid plan it reads Cancel plan. Either one starts the same cancellation flow. Note your access-until date first — the page states the exact date your plan ends.

3

Skip the "Before you go" retention modal

Todoist shows a "Before you go…" screen listing the features you'll lose and reminding you how many trial days are left. Ignore the highlighted Keep benefits button and click Cancel subscription to continue.

4

Fill the required cancellation reason

The "Help us improve" form asks for a Main reason for canceling and a "What made you cancel today?" answer. The text box is required — leave it blank and you'll see "Please provide an answer" and the Cancel subscription button stays greyed out. The Suggestions for our team field is optional.

5

Confirm with Cancel subscription

Pick a reason (for example, Other), type a short note in the feedback box, and the red Cancel subscription button activates. Click it to finalize. You don't need to write anything meaningful — a few words is enough to unlock the button.

6

Verify your access-until date

The Subscription page confirms the cancellation: your team keeps paid access until the stated date, then automatically moves back to the free limits. A Renew trial (or Renew plan) button replaces Cancel — proof the cancellation went through. Your tasks, projects, and history stay accessible after the downgrade.

Cancelling a paid plan instead of a trial

The path is identical (Settings → Subscription → Cancel plan), with one difference: a paid plan stays active until the end of the current billing period, then drops to Beginner. If you're on a yearly Pro plan within 30 days of purchase or renewal, Todoist offers an extra option to "End the subscription immediately and receive a refund."

If you subscribed through Apple, Google, or Microsoft

If your trial or plan was started through an app store, the in-app Subscription tab may not let you cancel. Manage it where you bought it: iPhone/iPad via Settings > [your name] > Subscriptions, Android via Google Play subscriptions, or the Microsoft Store. Apple and Microsoft handle their own refunds; for Google Play, cancel first, then contact Todoist for a yearly refund.

If you were auto-renewed at full price

Some legacy discounts (the retired Student/Education plan) silently auto-renew at the full Business price. If that happened, contact Todoist Support with your receipt or order ID — users report being refunded even outside the standard 30-day self-serve window.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Cancelling a trial before its first-payment date means you're never billed. You keep the trial's paid features until the trial end date shown on the Subscription page, then your account automatically reverts to the free Beginner plan. For a paid plan, cancelling stops the next renewal — you keep access until the end of the current billing period.

Yearly Pro is fully refundable if you cancel within 30 days of purchase or renewal, and you can trigger that refund yourself from the Subscription settings ("End the subscription immediately and receive a refund"). Monthly Pro and Business payments aren't refundable unless your country's consumer-protection laws require it. Outside the 30-day window, yearly refunds aren't available — though Support has refunded unexpected full-price auto-renewals (like the retired Education plan) when contacted.

Your data stays. After a trial or paid plan ends, you're moved to the free Beginner plan with all your tasks, projects, and history intact. You lose Pro/Business-only features (extra projects beyond the free limit, calendar layout, reminders, team workspace), but nothing is deleted — upgrade again and the features return.

Cancel through whichever store handles billing — the in-app Subscription tab may not show a cancel option. On iPhone/iPad: Settings > [your name] > Subscriptions. On Android: Google Play > Subscriptions. On the Microsoft Store: your Microsoft account. For refunds, Apple and Microsoft process their own (Todoist can't); for Google Play, cancel first, then contact Todoist about a yearly refund.

Yes — that's the point of cancelling during the trial. Go to Settings > Subscription, click Cancel trial, skip the "Before you go" modal with Cancel subscription, fill the required reason field, and confirm. As long as you do this before the first-payment date shown on the page, no charge is made and you simply drop to the free plan when the trial ends.

Yes. After cancelling, the Subscription page shows a Renew trial or Renew plan button you can click to reactivate. If you've already dropped to the Beginner plan, just start a new Pro or Business subscription from the same Subscription settings — your projects and history are still there, so everything comes back as soon as you upgrade.
