Quick answer

Open app.ynab.com/settings in a web browser and sign in. The YNAB app has no billing settings, so on a phone use the phone's browser. Scroll down, click Cancel Subscription and confirm. You keep YNAB until the end of the period you paid for. If Apple or Google bills you, cancel with them instead. Monthly fees aren't refunded, and since late September 2026 YNAB no longer promises a prorated refund on annual plans outside the UK, Switzerland and the EEA, so don't delete your account expecting one.

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Open app.ynab.com/settings in a web browser

Cancelling only works in YNAB's web app. YNAB's help says billing and subscription details aren't available in the mobile app's settings, so on a phone, type app.ynab.com/settings straight into Safari or Chrome instead of opening the app, and sign in with your YNAB email. One user who tried this from a phone found that plain app.ynab.com told them to download the app, and only the full /settings address reached their account page. On a computer you can also open the web app, click the name of your plan at the top of the left sidebar and choose Account Settings.

  2. Find the Subscription section and check who bills you

Scroll to the Subscription section of Account Settings. If you see a Trial section with a Subscribe Now button instead, you're on YNAB's own free trial with no subscription set up, and YNAB says there's typically nothing to cancel: the trial just ends. YNAB can only cancel a subscription you bought from YNAB. If you subscribed inside the iPhone or Android app through Apple or Google, use the matching step below instead. Not sure which? The charge on your card statement names YNAB, Apple or Google.

  3. Click Cancel Subscription and confirm

Scroll further down and click Cancel Subscription. YNAB's cancellation policy calls it the "Cancel your subscription" button and says the page isn't long; the phone user above found it as small text near the bottom. Follow the prompts and confirm. YNAB doesn't document the screens after the click, though one user who cancelled in April 2026 posted the reason they typed in, so expect a short reason box. Once you confirm, YNAB says you won't be charged again. You keep full access until the end of your billing period, and you can resume the subscription any time before that date.

  4. If this applies to you

If you subscribed through Apple (iPhone or iPad)

Apple bills you, so YNAB's web page can't cancel it. On an iPhone or iPad, open Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions, choose YNAB and cancel. You can also go to apps.apple.com/account/subscriptions, or, as YNAB's cancellation page puts it, open the YNAB app and go to Settings, then Manage Subscription in iTunes. Use the Apple ID that was charged. Apple handles refunds for Apple charges under its own terms; YNAB's help points to Apple's refund page at support.apple.com/118223. An Apple free trial turns into a paid subscription on its own, so cancel before the 34 days run out if you don't want it.

  5. If this applies to you

If you subscribed through Google Play (Android)

Google bills you, so cancel in Google Play: go to play.google.com/store/account/subscriptions, or open the Play Store app, tap your profile picture in the top right, then Payments and subscriptions, then Subscriptions, and cancel YNAB. YNAB's help says refunds for a Google Play subscription must be requested within 48 hours of subscribing, through Google's refund request form, and that a Google Play trial renews as a paid subscription automatically.

  6. If this applies to you

Export your plan before the end date

YNAB's terms say the service needs a paid subscription, and its help says you lose access to your plan once the subscription expires, so there's no free tier to fall back on. Export only works in the web app: click the name of your plan at the top of the left sidebar and choose Export Plan. You get two files, the plan with its categories and your full transaction history, as CSV files (TSV for currencies that use a comma). Targets and category notes aren't included, and photos attached to transactions only download one at a time.

  7. If this applies to you

If you share YNAB through YNAB Together

YNAB Together lets up to six people share one subscription, paid by the group manager. If you're a member, you have nothing to cancel: in Account Settings, under Subscription, choose Leave Group. Your own plans stay with your account, plans others shared with you stop being shared, and YNAB moves you to a 34-day trial before your access ends. If you're the manager, YNAB's help says members share your subscription but doesn't say what happens to them when you cancel, so tell them first and give them time to export. Joining someone else's group while you pay YNAB directly also cancels your own subscription, with a prorated refund on an annual plan and none on a monthly one. If you and a partner merged into one account, check that the other subscription was cancelled: one r/ynab couple found they had been paying twice a year for four years.

  8. If this applies to you

Know that deleting your account is not the same as cancelling

Deleting your YNAB account is permanent. It ends the subscription, deletes the plans you own and disconnects your linked bank accounts; YNAB asks MX, one of its bank-data providers, to delete your data, and Plaid connections are managed at my.plaid.com. A deleted account can't be restored, though you can sign up again with the same email. Deleting ends a direct or Google Play subscription automatically, but not an Apple one, so cancel with Apple first. You'll need to turn off Two-Step Verification, and leave any employer Wellness group, before you can delete. The YNAB app has a Delete Account button even though it has no cancel button, so don't tap it by mistake.

Heads up: Don't delete your account to get money back without checking first. Until September 2026, YNAB's own pages said deleting an annual account triggered an automatic prorated refund, and many Reddit answers still say so, including a 2023 one from YNAB's community manager. YNAB has since removed that promise for everyone outside the UK, Switzerland and the EEA. Email help@ynab.com and get an answer in writing before you give up your budget.

  9. If this applies to you

If you're still charged after cancelling

Check who charged you first: the line on your statement names YNAB, Apple or Google, and only that company can stop it. Then look for a second YNAB subscription on another email address, the leftover the couple above found. If the charge is from YNAB and you did cancel, email help@ynab.com from your account's email address, or ask the support chatbot for a human. YNAB's US terms say you must raise a charge you think is wrong within 60 days, or it counts as accepted. One user who was billed a year after cancelling got it sorted through support, who found YNAB billed them directly even though they thought they had used their Apple account.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I be charged after canceling YNAB?

Not by YNAB, once you confirm the cancellation in Account Settings. YNAB's US terms say subscriptions are billed in advance and renew automatically unless you cancel before the renewal date, so cancel a day or more ahead rather than on the day. You keep access until the end of the period you already paid for, and you can resume the subscription until then. A subscription bought through Apple or Google is separate and keeps billing until you cancel it with them.

Can I get a refund from YNAB?

Usually not for time you've already paid for. YNAB's terms say monthly fees are non-refundable and that it gives no retroactive refunds, discounts or extensions for unused features or outages, Direct Import outages included. Annual plans changed recently: until September 2026 YNAB refunded the unused part of an annual plan if you deleted your account, but that promise is gone from its cancellation policy and refund page for users outside the UK, Switzerland and the EEA, and its US terms neither promise nor rule out an annual refund. Ask help@ynab.com before deleting anything. In the UK, Switzerland and the EEA, YNAB's terms give you a 14-day right to withdraw, but count it from buying a subscription in one sentence and from account creation in the next, so act early. You also get 14 days after each annual renewal. YNAB may deduct the time you used, and you withdraw by emailing help@ynab.com to say you're withdrawing. There, cancelling an annual plan and deleting the account also brings a prorated refund from the deletion date. Apple refunds Apple purchases, and for Google Play, YNAB says to request a refund within 48 hours of subscribing. Unredeemed gift subscriptions can be refunded; redeemed ones can't.

What happens to my YNAB budget and bank connections after I cancel?

Cancelling deletes nothing. You keep using YNAB as normal until the paid period ends. After that you lose access to your plan until you subscribe again, and resubscribing restores it. YNAB's privacy policy says it keeps most account data for up to 24 months after a subscription expires, and its help says it will remind you before deleting it. An expired free-trial account is deleted 120 days after the trial ends, with an email a week before. If you want a copy, export from the web app before your end date. Deleting your account is the destructive option: it deletes the plans you own, disconnects your banks and can't be undone.

How do I cancel YNAB on my phone, or if I subscribed through Apple or Google?

If you pay YNAB directly, the app can't do it: open your phone's browser, go to app.ynab.com/settings, sign in and use Cancel Subscription. If Apple bills you, cancel in iPhone Settings, then your name, then Subscriptions, or from the YNAB app's Settings through Manage Subscription in iTunes. If Google bills you, cancel at play.google.com/store/account/subscriptions or in the Play Store app under Payments and subscriptions. Your card statement shows which of the three charges you. Deleting the YNAB account cancels a Google Play subscription, but not an Apple one.

Do I need to cancel the YNAB free trial?

Not if you signed up with YNAB directly. YNAB doesn't ask for a card for its 34-day trial, and the trial doesn't turn into a paid plan on its own, so you can let it run out. The exception is if you subscribed during the trial: a subscription then starts when the trial ends, so cancel it in Account Settings (deleting the account cancels it too). Trials started in the iPhone or Android app work differently: Apple and Google charge for a regular subscription when the trial ends unless you cancel with them first.

Can I rejoin YNAB after canceling?

Yes. Before your end date, you can resume the subscription. After it expires, sign in and subscribe again, and your plans come back as long as YNAB hasn't deleted them under its retention policy (up to 24 months). You pay the price YNAB charges at the time: $14.99 a month or $109 a year as of November 2026, plus tax where it applies, for up to six people. If you deleted your account, you can create a new one with the same email, but your old plans are gone. YNAB offers its free trial to new users, so don't count on a second one.
